New film by ‘04, ‘05 alumns to be shown Saturday at St. Bonaventure
Last week, I was interviewed for my college newspaper, The BV. Today, while mousing around on Facebook I noticed my picture on the St. Bonaventure news feed. I also found this sweet article about our film, Zeus, which screens for FREE this weekend at St. Bonaventure! (I’m the ‘04 in the title; Lou’s the ‘05). Check out the article and then come see Zeus. Oh yeah, and GO BONAS!
I get really nervous before we screen Zeus and I say things. This is some of those things that I say. Thanks to @angiewaldron for taking this video.
Introduction of Zeus at the first ever public screening in Los Angeles, CA at Dave Lyon’s house in August 2011. The screening started in Dave’s backyard until his neighbor threw rocks at us and yelled, “turn down your TV!”

Dave’s neighbor throws rocks. We figured that noise would be a non-issue seeing how we planned to premiere Zeus at 9 pm on a Friday evening in Dave’s backyard. He’s had comedy shows, numerous raucous parties, and film screenings back there before this. Plus the crowd was only about a dozen strong by the time we’d started the movie, but as soon as the opening credits rolled, shouts of “Turn your TV down!” were hurled over the fence. And then a couple of rocks.
First of all the sound was shit. This guy didn’t know what he was telling us to turn down. We didn’t really test the speakers before the screening, instead we just jammed some cords into the side of our Macbook Pro and hit play. So it came as a little bit of a relief that Dave’s neighbor, the rock thrower, turned out to be a huge asshole. So we moved the screening inside. Jokes on the rock thrower though because we turned the volume on Dave’s 52-inch Sony flat screen to 90; not to mention that the film looked and sounded way better in a confined area.
Oh yeah, and this was the first ever public screening of Zeus. The first time anyone outside of friends and family had seen this thing that I’d been laboring on for the better part of three years. The dozen party goers-turned movie viewers-turned rock duckers were all friends or at least friends of friends, so I was only slightly nervous to screen Zeus for them. Whether I knew them well or not, I still held their opinions of my work in very high regard, the kind usually reserved for authority figures, because these were people who live and work in Los Angeles; talented artists who create videos and music and animations on a daily/weekly/monthly basis for things like Channel 101 and actually television and movies. These were the people that I wanted to show my film to so desperately and gain their approval.
And I think I did. I mean, I kind of blacked out for most of the film. I tucked myself away in a corner and watched with everyone. I didn’t get up to pee once even though I drank 3 beers during the screening, and not because I didn’t want to miss anything but mostly because I’d have to walk past everyone and see their faces while they watched my film. I heard a few laughs (Angie seemed to hear more than I did, phew) and when the end credits started everyone clapped and told me good job. I thanked them and said, “Thank you for watching my movie. You have no idea how excruciating it is to watch that with other people.” Everyone laughed again. Then they went outside and smoked cigarettes and drank beer.
I was still kind of in a daze. I wasn’t sure what had just happened. Did people really just watch my film and then clap for it? Did they hate it? I wasn’t sure. Dave and Hunter gave me some positive feedback, tole me their favorite scenes, etc. It’s a really weird feeling putting something that you’ve spent so much time creating out into the world for people to digest. I’ve learned a lot about filmmaking. I learned what still needs to be done in order to finish this film (some more sound edits and a color correction). And I’ve learned that I want to do it over and over again starting immediately.
Zeus makes its WNY debut on Saturday August 27th at 7pm at JCC’s Cutco Theater, presented by the Buffalo Morose. It’s free. Be there. But please don’t throw rocks at us.
